Why Privileged Groups Don’t Need Pride

I thought that the only people who would defend something like white pride would be openly racist hate crime apologists in confederate flag bikinis, but it turns out there are some well-intentioned people who simply don’t understand why it’s offensive. Let me break it down for those of you who just don’t get it.

In order to keep marginalized groups complacent in their degradation, oppressors try to destroy the group’s pride in their identity. Queer pride, black pride, latinx pride, etc. is used as a rebellion against internalized oppression.

For example, when I say that I’m proud to be bisexual, I don’t mean that I’m proud of the fact I was born attracted to men and women. My queerness is not something that I achieved. What I mean is that I’m proud of what I’ve overcome as an openly bisexual person in a society where homosexuality is demonized and erased.

White people, heterosexuals, insert any other majority group here, don’t face systematic oppression due to their identity. Therefore, their so-called pride movements have no political relevance and are entirely redundant. But, in the name of equality, some privileged folks who don’t understand the intricacies of oppression insist on co-opting pride movements.

And, I’d advise any well-intentioned ally to steer clear of identifying with white pride or any other pride movement for the already privileged. White pride has been historically used to justify racism, hatred, and segregation. Straight pride is used to silence queer people. Male pride is used to make a mockery of feminism.

Of course, I’m not saying that majority groups should feel guilty for being born the way they are. But, so-called pride movements for majority groups undermine the importance of actual pride movements. It’s a matter of respect for marginalized groups and what they have been through.
